7 Days Darwin, Kakadu National Park, Katherine Gorge Tour

  • Kakadu & Katherine Gorge
  • 7 Days

Overview

A journey through Australia’s Top End is never just a holiday—it’s an immersion into one of the world’s most ancient, culturally rich, and ecologically diverse landscapes. This 7‑day Darwin, Kakadu National Park, and Katherine Gorge Touring Package brings together the Northern Territory’s most iconic experiences in a single, seamless adventure. Designed for travellers who want the perfect balance of guided exploration and independent discovery, the itinerary begins and ends in Darwin, the tropical capital known for its vibrant markets, WWII history, and relaxed coastal lifestyle.

From the moment you arrive, the Top End’s rhythm takes over: warm air, big skies, and landscapes shaped by monsoon rains, sandstone escarpments, and thousands of years of Aboriginal culture. Over the week, you’ll explore three of the region’s most celebrated destinations—each offering something profoundly different.

Kakadu National Park, Australia’s largest national park and a dual UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a place where nature and culture intertwine on a monumental scale. Its wetlands teem with birdlife and saltwater crocodiles, while its ancient stone country shelters some of the world’s oldest and most significant Aboriginal rock art. At Ubirr, you’ll stand before galleries that trace 20,000 years of storytelling, spirituality, and connection to Country. Kakadu’s landscapes shift dramatically—from floodplains to towering escarpments—making every moment feel like a discovery. The Guluyambi Cruise, led by knowledgeable local guides, offers a rare opportunity to learn about traditional customs, bush survival, and the deep cultural significance of the East Alligator River region.

Further south lies Katherine Gorge, a breathtaking network of sandstone gorges carved by the Katherine River. Known officially as Nitmiluk Gorge, this natural wonder is famed for its sheer cliffs, tranquil waters, and spiritual importance to the Jawoyn people. A cruise through the gorge reveals a world of hidden beaches, ancient rock shelters, and dramatic geological formations. The chance to swim in the natural pool at Edith Falls adds a refreshing, unforgettable highlight to the day’s journey.

Across the week, you’ll also explore Darwin’s historic sites, wander through Litchfield’s waterfalls, and enjoy the comfort of arranged transfers, accommodation, and guided excursions. This tour is crafted to showcase the Northern Territory at its best—wild, welcoming, and wonderfully alive.

Day 2 Katherine Gorge - Darwin to Katherine Gorge

Leaving Darwin we travel south through tropical country, passing former WWII airstrips en route to Adelaide River. We make a short stop at the Adelaide River War Cemetery, a site dedicated to those killed in the air raids in Darwin in the 1940’s.

Continue to Edith Falls, where there is time for a refreshing swim in the paperbark and pandanas fringed waterhole beneath the falls (conditions permitting).

After your included lunch, we join a 2 hour scenic cruise through Katherine Gorge in Nitmiluk National Park, with a chance to see freshwater crocodiles sunning themselves on the banks of the river and many interesting species of birdlife. Our cruise of the first two gorges takes us past sheer rock walls and requires a short walk to reach the second gorge. Enjoy a drive back through the township of Katherine, the hub of the region’s cattle and farming industries. Travel via Pine Creek, an historic gold mining town, to our evening stop where you may purchase dinner at Emerald Springs (own expense) before returning to Darwin.
