Overview

This full-day adventure from Melbourne takes you to Wilsons Promontory National Park, Australia’s southernmost mainland point and Victoria’s first national park established in 1898. The tour departs early morning from Melbourne, typically around 8:00am, journeying through the scenic Gippsland region.

The experience immerses you in stunning scenery featuring white sandy beaches and lush forests along scenic walking tracks. Highlights include the famous Squeaky Beach, where pure white quartz sand literally squeaks underfoot, and hiking opportunities such as the challenging Mt Bishop summit walk or the gentler Lilly Pilly Gully rainforest trail, both offering spectacular views.

Wildlife encounters are a major drawcard, with excellent chances to spot kangaroos, wombats, emus, and native birds in their natural habitat. You’ll also visit the Giant Rock formation and charming Tidal River, learning about this extraordinary coastal wilderness.

The tour requires a medium fitness level and returns to Melbourne around 8:45pm. With its panoramic views, pristine beaches, coastal forests, and cool climate rainforests, this day trip offers an unforgettable taste of one of Victoria’s most cherished natural attractions.

Wilsons Promontory National Park, affectionately known as “The Prom,” is one of Australia’s most spectacular coastal wilderness areas located at the southernmost tip of mainland Australia in Victoria.

Key Features:

Natural Beauty The park encompasses over 50,000 hectares of pristine wilderness, featuring dramatic granite mountains, secluded beaches with white quartz sand, coastal heathlands, and cool temperate rainforests. The landscape is incredibly diverse, ranging from rugged mountain peaks to sheltered bays.

Itinerary

Wilsons Promontory National Park, known by locals as simply ‘the Prom,’ was designated a national park in 1898 and has been one of Victoria’s best-loved nature escapes ever since. Begin your full-day tour of this coastal wilderness with morning pickup at select Melbourne hotels or a central Melbourne meeting point. Leave the bustle of the city behind and relax on the drive to Australia’s southernmost tip, with stops to stretch your legs and purchase snacks along the way.

Once inside the park, follow your guide along scenic beach, bush and forest trails to explore the Prom’s diverse landscapes by foot. Trails range from flat and leisurely to a moderately challenging uphill trek for panoramic mountain views. Make plenty of stops along the way to capture photos and soak in the peaceful surroundings. Be prepared to encounter many of the areas wild residents, including kangaroos, wallabies, wombats and emus.

From the shore, gaze off into the expansive Bass Strait that separates Australia from Tasmania and admire the granite cliffs of Giant Rock. Walk along the beautiful and aptly named Squeaky Beach, where the quartz sand seems to chirp and sing beneath your feet.

Sit back and relax on the return drive to Melbourne, with a stop for dinner along the way (own expense). You’ll be dropped off back at your Melbourne hotel or original departure point in the late evening.
