Brisbane is the capital of Queensland, Australia, and the country's third-largest city with around 2.6 million people in the metropolitan area. Located along the Brisbane River about 900 kilometers north of Sydney, it enjoys a subtropical climate and is known for its relaxed outdoor lifestyle, with attractions like South Bank Parklands, vibrant neighborhoods such as West End and Fortitude Valley, and easy access to Moreton Bay's islands. As Queensland's major business hub with strong mining, agriculture, and technology sectors, Brisbane offers a more affordable alternative to Sydney and Melbourne while maintaining excellent quality of life, and the city will host the 2032 Olympics, bringing further international attention and development.
South Bank is Brisbane’s cultural heart, featuring the Queensland Cultural Centre (with art galleries and museums), South Bank Parklands with its man-made beach and lagoon, weekend markets, and riverside dining. The nearby Queensland Museum and Science Centre are also worth visiting.
Story Bridge offers spectacular city views – you can climb it for panoramic vistas or simply walk across. The nearby Kangaroo Point Cliffs provide another great viewpoint and rock climbing opportunities.
West End and Fortitude Valley are Brisbane’s coolest neighborhoods, packed with independent cafes, bars, live music venues, and street art. The Valley also has great shopping and nightlife.
Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Mount Coot-tha offers beautiful gardens and the city’s best lookout point. The original City Botanic Gardens in the CBD are perfect for a riverside stroll.
Queensland Art Gallery & Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) houses impressive collections including significant contemporary Asian and Pacific art.
Eagle Street Pier and Howard Smith Wharves offer upscale dining with river views and are great for sunset drinks.
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary lets you cuddle koalas and meet other native Australian wildlife – it’s one of the world’s first koala sanctuaries.
CityCat ferry rides along the Brisbane River provide a scenic way to see the city and reach various attractions.
For day trips, consider Moreton Island for sandboarding and snorkeling, or the Gold Coast beaches about an hour south.
