About Uluru

Uluru, also known by its colonial name Ayers Rock, is a massive sandstone monolith that rises dramatically from the red desert plains of central Australia in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, approximately 450 kilometers southwest of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. This sacred site stands 348 meters high and measures 9.4 kilometers in circumference, making it one of the world's largest monoliths and Australia's most iconic natural landmark. For the Anangu people, the traditional Aboriginal owners of the land, Uluru holds profound spiritual significance as a living cultural landscape woven through with ancestral stories, traditional law, and ceremony that stretches back over 65,000 years. The rock's surface features numerous caves, springs, and rock art sites that tell the Tjukurpa (creation stories), while its striking appearance changes throughout the day as the sun casts different hues across its ancient surface—from deep reds and purples at sunrise and sunset to brilliant oranges and golds during the day. Since 2019, climbing Uluru has been prohibited out of respect for Anangu culture and wishes, as the climb followed a sacred ceremonial route, and visitors are instead encouraged to explore the base walks, learn about Aboriginal culture at the nearby Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre, and witness the stunning sunrise and sunset views that have made this UNESCO World Heritage site one of Australia's most spiritually moving and photographed destinations.
