Byron Bay is a beautiful coastal town in northern New South Wales, Australia, about 165km south of Brisbane. It's famous for being Australia's easternmost point, marked by the iconic Cape Byron Lighthouse that sits dramatically on the headland.
The town has a distinctive laid-back, bohemian vibe that attracts surfers, backpackers, and wellness enthusiasts from around the world. Byron's stunning beaches stretch for miles, with Main Beach being perfect for swimming and Wategos Beach offering more secluded golden sand. The consistent waves make it a legendary surf destination.
Beyond the beaches, Byron Bay is known for its alternative culture, vibrant arts scene, and focus on sustainability and wellness. You'll find excellent cafes, markets (especially the weekend community markets), yoga studios, and health food stores throughout the town. The hinterland behind Byron offers lush rainforest, waterfalls, and charming villages like Nimbin and Mullumbimby.
The area attracts a fascinating mix of people - from international backpackers and surfers to wealthy sea-changers, artists, and spiritual seekers. This creates a unique atmosphere that's both relaxed and energetic.
Popular activities include whale watching (June-November), visiting the lighthouse at sunrise, exploring the coastal walking tracks, and checking out the eclectic music and festival scene. Byron also serves as a great base for exploring the broader Northern Rivers region.
Here are the must-see attractions and sights in Byron Bay:
Cape Byron Lighthouse The iconic white lighthouse at Australia’s easternmost point offers spectacular 360-degree views. It’s particularly stunning at sunrise, and you can take guided tours inside the lighthouse itself.

Crystal Castle & Shambhala Gardens Beautiful gardens featuring the world’s largest amethyst geode, crystal displays, and peaceful walking paths through rainforest.
Minyon Falls About 45 minutes inland, this 100-meter waterfall is one of the region’s most spectacular, accessible via a short walk through subtropical rainforest.

Most of these can be easily reached on foot, by bike, or with short drives from the town center.
CDC NSW operates the main local bus services in Byron Bay and surrounding areas. The key routes for tourists are:
Route 640 – Connects Ballina, Ballina Airport, Lennox Head, Suffolk Park, Byron Bay, and Mullumbimby. This route operates on weekdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Route 637 – A local loop service within Byron Bay covering Sunrise Beach, Arts & Industry Estate, Suffolk Park, Byron Hills, and Baywood Chase. This operates on weekdays and Saturday evenings.
Route 641 – Runs between Byron Bay, Bangalow, and Ballina, operating on weekdays.
All buses depart from Byron Bay Interchange on Butler Street, and CDC NSW accepts both cash and card payments on board.
The Route 640 is particularly useful for tourists as it connects to Suffolk Park (near Tallow Beach) and Lennox Head. However, Byron Bay’s main tourist attractions like the Cape Byron Lighthouse, Main Beach, and the town center are quite walkable from each other.
For detailed timetables, you can check the CDC NSW website or visit the Byron Bay Visitor Centre on Jonson Street.
Note: Most of Byron Bay’s key attractions are within walking or cycling distance of the town center, so many visitors find they don’t need extensive bus services once they’re in town!
