Bruny Island is a pristine wilderness gem off the southeastern coast of Tasmania, accessible by a short ferry ride from Kettering. Actually two islands connected by a narrow sandy isthmus called "The Neck," Bruny offers visitors a remarkable blend of rugged natural beauty and gourmet food experiences.
The island is renowned for its dramatic coastal scenery, including towering sea cliffs at South Bruny, tranquil beaches, and the iconic Cape Bruny Lighthouse. Wildlife enthusiasts flock here to spot white wallabies, little penguins, and abundant birdlife, while the surrounding waters host migrating whales and playful dolphins.
Bruny has gained fame as a foodie destination, producing exceptional cheeses, oysters, wines, whisky, and craft beverages. The island's artisan producers welcome visitors to taste their wares, making it a popular day trip or weekend escape for food lovers.
Outdoor adventures abound, from kayaking along pristine coastlines to bushwalking through native forests and climbing to panoramic lookout points. The Neck features a striking wooden staircase offering breathtaking views across both sides of the isthmus.
With its combination of unspoiled landscapes, unique wildlife, exceptional local produce, and peaceful atmosphere, Bruny Island captures the essence of Tasmania's natural beauty and has become one of the state's most cherished destinations for both locals and travelers.

You can take the Route 415 bus from Hobart Interchange to Kettering Ferry Terminal, then transfer to the SeaLink ferry. Pedestrians travel free on the ferry, making this an affordable option. The journey takes approximately 1 hour 18 minutes total.
Bus Services ON Bruny Island:
Unfortunately, there is no public transport available on Bruny Island itself. This creates a challenge for visitors without their own vehicle.
Your Options:
Bring your own car – The ferry departs every 20 minutes from Kettering between 6:10am and 7:00pm daily. Note: Some rental car companies don’t allow their vehicles on Bruny Island, so check terms before booking.
Join a guided tour – Tour companies offer connecting bus services from Hobart, which solves the transport problem and includes guided experiences.
Private transfers – Some bus charter companies offer private group transfers to the island.
Bottom Line: Without your own vehicle or a tour, exploring Bruny Island is extremely difficult due to the lack of public transportation on the island itself.
