Hobart is the capital city of Tasmania, Australia's island state, nestled at the base of Mount Wellington along the Derwent River. Founded in 1804 as a British penal colony, it's Australia's second-oldest capital city and retains much of its colonial charm through well-preserved Georgian architecture, particularly around Salamanca Place and Battery Point. The city serves as Tasmania's economic and cultural hub, home to around 250,000 people in the greater metropolitan area, and is renowned for its vibrant arts scene, including the world-famous Museum of Old and New Art (MONA). Hobart's economy relies heavily on tourism, education (anchored by the University of Tasmania), government services, and its role as a gateway to Antarctica, while the city's temperate oceanic climate and stunning natural setting make it a popular destination for both visitors and those seeking a quieter alternative to Australia's larger mainland cities.
Hobart offers a compelling mix of cultural attractions, natural beauty, and unique experiences:
Museums & Culture The Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) is the city’s star attraction, featuring provocative contemporary art in a stunning underground setting. The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery showcases local history and natural heritage, while the Maritime Museum explores the island’s seafaring past.
Historic Areas Salamanca Place buzzes with Saturday markets, galleries, and cafes housed in beautiful 1830s sandstone warehouses. Battery Point is perfect for wandering through Georgian-era streets and cottages, offering glimpses into colonial life. The historic Cascade Brewery, Australia’s oldest operating brewery, provides tours and tastings.
Natural Attractions Mount Wellington (kunanyi) towers over the city, offering spectacular views and hiking trails accessible by car or on foot. The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens feature native plants and stunning river views, while nearby Mount Field National Park showcases waterfalls and temperate rainforest.
Food & Drink Hobart’s food scene centers around fresh seafood, local produce, and cool-climate wines. Visit fish markets, waterfront restaurants, and local distilleries. The city has become increasingly renowned for its craft beer scene and innovative dining.
Day Trips Take the ferry to the Museum of Old and New Art, explore the Derwent Valley’s hop farms and historic towns, or venture to Bruny Island for gourmet food trails and wildlife spotting. Port Arthur Historic Site, about an hour’s drive, offers haunting insights into Australia’s convict history.
The compact city center makes most attractions easily walkable or accessible by short drives.
Metro provides bus services across the greater Hobart region with access to city highlights including Salamanca Market, Farm Gate Market, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, and Mawson’s Hut Replica Museum. Most buses depart from Elizabeth Street (between Macquarie and Collins Streets) or Franklin Square.
Getting a Greencard: A Greencard rewards you with a 20% discount on regular fares, low daily caps and free 90 minute transfers. You can get one from the Metro Shop on Elizabeth Street or Greencard agents around the city. Note that you can’t tap with credit/debit cards yet – it’s cash or Greencard only.
Key attractions accessible: Cascade Brewery, MONA, Seven Mile Beach, Fern Tree (Mt Wellington foothills), and the Shot Tower at Taroona.
The Red Decker is a popular tourist option with 20 stops along a 90-minute loop, valid for 24 hours from first boarding, running 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM daily. Stops include:
The open-top double decker has audio commentary in 8 languages.
For kunanyi/Mt Wellington, you’ll need the Explorer Bus rather than regular Metro buses, as it’s the only one that can access the summit through the locked gate.
While Metro buses go near MONA, you can catch a private ferry from Brooke Street Pier to the museum in Claremont, which takes 25 minutes.
